About the Movie
Set in the Hollywood of the thirties, screen legend Natalie Wood ("West Side Story," "Rebel Without a Cause") stars in a behind-the-scenes epic, the story of the effects of the Hollywood dream machine on a spirited young singer and actress from the time of her discovery at age 15 through her triumphs and defeats. Also starring screen legend Robert Redford ("Up Close and Personal," "Indecent Proposal"), real-life grown-up teen star Roddy McDowall ("Lassie, Come Home," "Planet of the Apes" series), Christopher Plummer ("The Sound of Music," "Somewhere in Time") and Ruth Gordon ("Harold and Maude," "Rosemary's Baby"), who garnered an Oscar nomination for her performance.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Hollywood self-satire is also a corridor of mirrors where movie makers are apt to start cringing.
Rotten: Covering a two-year period, the outcome is at times disjointed and episodic as the title character played by Natalie Wood emerges more nebulous than definitive.
Rotten: Wood's movements are spasmodic and graceless. The director Robert Mulligan can't quite find the rhythm, either. Some of the picture is whimsical, some of it as lugubrious as a horror movie.
Fresh: Gavin Lambert's screenplay (from his own novel) lives in the land of the ambiguous and fey, which is probably why the film now seems subtle and attractive.
This is one of my all time favorite movies.
My mom made me watch this repeatedly as a child, along with The Bad Seed and Mommy Dearest. I love Robert Redford in this more than Wood, but it is all good.
A must have for film buffs.
