Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: If the motion-picture industry had existed in 1847, the year Charlotte Bronte's novel appeared, it might have produced an adaptation much like this one.
Fresh: True aficionados will doubtless wish the film etched every aspect of the Bronte experience but that's a quibble in light of the movie's intoxicating charms. It's impossible not to fall in love with this Jane.
Fresh: Screenwriter Moira Buffini sticks pretty closely to the novel, and director Cary Fukunaga conjures a drab tone that nicely sets off the characters' violent but rigidly controlled passions.
Fresh: By opening their movie with the mature Jane, the filmmakers forge an emotional bond between her and the audience.
This film evidences Mia Wasikowska's talent. Her performance is chilling and and eerily luminous. Wasikowska appears before our eyes like the distinguished, alien human that Mr. Rochester believes Jane to be. As for being his salvation from the chains of a ruined and unnatural marriage, she delivers on every note, providing Jane's youthful spirit that knows wisdom but not age.
The Worst of them All
Of all the adaptations of Jane Eyre over the years this is without a doubt the worst. So while I was home sick today I watched the new Jane Eyre. Their relationship was not built at all(they never showed their how intellectual their relationship was) , they took liberties with the time period and protocol of the period, not to mention completely butchering the story. The entire essence of that the story was --a Gothic romance-- was totally brushed over and then the balance of the theme of spiritual belief was totally left out of the story.
I would strongly recommend any adaptation over this one. I am very disappointed as I was so looking forward to this movie.
Aside from Judi Dench this is worst version EVER!
I've seen many different Jane Eyre adaptations, and this movie ranks up there with the best! The atmosphere of the movie was misty and haunting, perfect for this tale of secrecy and heartbreak. But the real highlights of the movie were Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender - their acting was superb! I thoroughly enjoyed renditions of Jane and Mr. Rochester (I feel in love with him all over again!) IMy favorite part was when Jane ran and Mr. Rochester shouted for her from the window - so emotional! You can feel the emotion and desperation in his voice!
I highly recommend this movie and will watch it over and over and over again.
