About the Movie
Based on the hugely popular American Girl book series, Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin stars as a resourceful young girl whose bravery, compassion and determination help her save her family's home during the Great Depression. Aspiring reporter Kit Kittredge can't resist bringing home strays, whether it's Grace, an abandoned basset hound, or Will (Max Thieriot) and Countee (Willow Smith), a pair of young hobos willing to trade work for meals. Bright, inquisitive and generous, Kit is a natural born leader. But her happy childhood is abruptly interrupted when her father (Chris O'Donnell) loses his car dealership and must leave Cincinnati to look for work. Kit and her mother Margaret (Julia Ormond) are left to manage on their own, growing vegetables, selling eggs and even taking in an assortment of boarders including an itinerant magician (Stanley Tucci), a vivacious dance instructor on the prowl for a husband (Jane Krakowski) and a zany mobile librarian (Joan Cusack).

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: This classy, heart-on-its-sleeve movie is packed with laudable life lessons and Depression-era trivia.
Fresh: A gently thoughtful, audience-appropriate entertainment that assembles swell actors to play colorful characters who don't shy away from depicting serious hard times.
Fresh: Though predictable and unabashedly sentimental, the film is a warmly appealing tale of a bright girl bravely navigating tough times.
Rotten: The tweener girls for whom it is aimed deserve better. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
I LOVE how American Girl teaches girls to love history. Its true! After reading the Kit, Molly, and Samantha books, I knew every answer to my eighth grade teacher's questions right off the bat when we were studying the progressive era, the depression, and World War II. My only issue with these fabulous movies is that they stopped having a lot to do with the book once the Molly movie came out. If you read the Felicity, Samantha, Kit, and Molly books and then go see the movies, you'll see what I mean about how the Samantha and Felicity movies were exactly like the books and the Kit and Molly movies weren't. Still, this was without a doubt the best yet. It definitely deserved to go into theaters.
im 24 and rented this movie based on my childhood obsession with the american girl book series. let me tell you, i DO NOT cry with/at movies and Kit teared me up the whole way. its ironic, because the time in which Kit lives isnt so far from what we see around us today (foreclosure, etc). Kit kept me giggling throughout as well, so dont expect a downer of a flick... the movie is brilliantly represenative of the era of which it depicts, but its flawlessly acted by cast players and definitely a good choice for mixed aged viewers. one of my new must have movies! they need a part 2!
Great Movie + Great story= Kit Kittredge: An American Girl
OK I`ll admit having read all the american girl books and seeing the earlier movies I was skeptical, but it was actually very good! It followed the books enough as to keep Kit fans happy but had its own plot. I applaud American Girl and can`t wait to see if they make another movie. Way to go!!!!!!
