Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A case of smart and talented people trying to jam a Cold War square into a Gulf War circle.
Fresh: Following a dozen years of docs, light comedy, and p.c. weepies, Candidate represents Demme's best dramatic filmmaking since The Silence of the Lambs.
Fresh: A stylish hoot: entertainingly edgy and ludicrous all at once.
Fresh: Demme serves the picture completely.
I'm sorry, the original is a classic, and this just isn't as good
Albeit, it is still a good movie, with good acting and an updated era for the story to take place in. But there is just no comparing this remake to its 1962 original. And it is also disappointing to see that all the kids who liked the movie (a) had no idea it was a remake, and (b) probably wouldn't like the original since it doesn't have 21st century levels of violence and language. Seriously, I'm fifteen and it is saddening to realize that. But in all honesty, I hope you rent the 1962 version (with incredible acting all around, especially from Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury), as it is much more worth your time.
A Lame Remake Attempt
Go view the original version where Communists disguised as Conservatives attempt to take over the country under the employ of the Red Chinese. Changing it to "evil Capitalists" was laughable. Despite some good acting, I'd pass on this flick. It failed at the box office for a reason. All in all....a very lame movie.
Demme is a saint to the filmmaking industry
I actually viewed this remake before seeing the original. After completely falling in love with Liev, I cannot help but like the remake better. The Sinatra/Washington character contrasted way too much between the two. Sinatra was not part of the "big plan" and Washington was and that is what made me enjoy it more. Yes, the original is a classic. I cannot argue with that. Still, it is hard to compare Angela and Meryl. That character was pretty twisted as far as "loving" her son went. Concluding, I think they are both wonderfully made films with a great cast and both are worth seeing.
