A fascinating look at the last, tragic Russian monarchs; the kindly, indecisive Czar Nicholas and his reclusive, fear-haunted Czarina. The story follows their problems from the onset through the introduction of Rasputin to the Russian Court, to the Czar's abdication and the family's execution at Ekaterinburg on July 16, 1918.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: One can be more or less hypnotized by the spectacle of their downfall, but it's difficult to be really moved by it.
Fresh: Sam Spiegel comes up with a rarity: the intimate epic, in telling the fascinating story of the downfall of the Romanovs.
Fresh: When James Goldman's script hits one of its frequent dead spots, Schaffner's camera is there to take up most of the slack with elegantly designed wide-screen compositions.
Fresh: Stodgy, but intermittently absorbing.
Good Movie BUT...
The movie is worthy of 5 stars but the version available here is severely edited and does not flow well. Over an hour has been cut out of the movie. I recommend getting it elsewhere and get the full close to 4 hour movie. It is well worth your time.
A great story that ends so tragically
Nicholas and Alexandra were not lucky people and not very fit to rule either. Alexandra was an annoying, stubborn, niave princess and Nicholas was too submissive and kind for the job. They also recieved really bad advice from the foney-boulougne holy man Rasputin. But also the old institutions of the 19th century were weighing on a new generation and that was the bad luck of the Romanovs. They did not deserve their horrible fate and the people could not see that it was not Nicholas or Alexandra's fault. They should have been wiser though and they did surrender. Besides, no one liked the Bolshiviks after that so Russia was in worse shape than before.
