Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: One Day is just a gimmicky "new" way of doing an old-fashioned love story. But we'll hear much more of Sturgess, Hathaway, and Lone Scherfig. – David Thomson, The New Republic, Aug 23, 2011

Rotten: Miscasting aside, there's simply very little excitement to the film since you can see where it's going -- chances are even just by reading this review -- right from the start. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Aug 19, 2011

Rotten: It's what a Nicholas Sparks movie would be if it were aimed at grown women rather than teenage girls. – Eric D. Snider, Film.com, Aug 19, 2011

Rotten: The result is a rom-com with ambition, keen to actually develop the characters and to mix a few tears with the laughs. Well, the effort is admirable, the movie not so much. – Rick Groen, Globe and Mail, Aug 19, 2011

A DECENT ROMANTIC DRAMA FOR WHAT IT IS

Just to let you know beforehand, I'm a guy, so I'm obviously not the first person you'd want to talk to about a movie like "One Day". But my girlfriend made me see it with her on a date (I would've preferred to see "Fright Night", but she got her way in the end), so I might as well give you my opinion about it. To be honest, it's really not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. The premise of the film was quite interesting to say the least (it follows the relationship of two friends on the exact same day over the course of 23 years) and the performances of Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as the two main characters, Emma and Dexter, were often believable and sincere. In addition, the score was beautifully conducted and the visual grandeur of the movie's European settings were simply breathtaking. However, there were a few problems with "One Day" that I can't help but point out. First of all, the pacing tended to be a little inconsistent at times, especially toward the middle of the film. Plus, the dialogue was extremely cliched and the ending came across as a bit confusing to me (probably because I never read the novel based on the flick in the first place). But those were mere specks compared to the biggest issue I had with the movie, which was Hathaway's extremely annoying faux British accent. Whoever her vocal coach was should've been replaced during production ASAP. All in all, "One Day" may be just another formulaic Nicholas Sparks book-turned-film targeted toward teenage girls and young adult women, but it's certainly not the worst one out there. The movie does have its moments of heartfelt emotion and strong acting, but it's still muddled down by a weak script and painfully generic dialogue. I don't recommend it to any guys like me whatsoever, but for the ladies who love these sort of flicks, you probably won't be disappointed. Now, if you excuse me, I'm gonna punch a brick wall just so I can recover all the manliness I lost while typing this review.

A must see

This is a definite must see movie! It is unbelievable and brilliant!!

Reminds me Too..

Don't understand why the tomatometer is 37%. This type of relationship does happen in real life. It is rather good, actually. Well played and artfully directed.
