About the Movie

You'll have a ball with this heartwarming, hilarious comedy! Christopher "C-dub" Wang is a Chinese-American gangsta-rapper wannabe with outrageous, and unlikely, dreams of becoming a pro basketball star. When his ping pong champion brother gets hurt, it's up to C-dub to pick up the paddle and save the family business. But when he's facing off against a devious rival player in the ping pong tournament of the year, will C-dub be up to the challenge? With some surprising help from an unusual group of kids, anything could happen!

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There's a deeper, touching acknowledgment of braggadocio as persona, how the commodified dissent of hip-hop lends itself to masking insecurities. – Nathan Lee, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Interest in Playa lies in the fact that director Jessica Yu is a documentarian with a daring taste in subjects. Yet in her first non-doc feature, she plays it safe; even the championship showdown feels polite. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: A good, clean, fun comedy that uses a table tennis championship to crack inside jokes about Los Angeles' Chinese-American community. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The movie doesn't take its broad, jokey premise terribly far, but it manages to sustain a goofy-sweet comic energy and offers sly observations about assimilation, sibling rivalry and the art of competitive maternal bragging. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Me Love-a Ping Pong Long Time!

Watched this last night after seeing the trailer on youtube over Christmas and seeing the poster for it on a yahoo "Best Movie Posters" list. Low-Budget, High-Entertainment value and simple story with charming characters all around. Well-directed and hilariously-acted with specifically-placed "love letters" to Asian-American culture (e.g. Saturday Chinese school, tow-hai slippers, wok-frying, posters, Aunties-gossip) and tributes to the '80s (e.g. pseudo-Rocky theme songs/score, pong video game, daisy dukes shorts) along with a bouncing soundtrack of Asian hip-hop up-and-comers.
