Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: You've got to hand it to Alfred Hitchcock: when he sows the fearful seeds of mistrust in one of his motion pictures he can raise more goose pimples to the square inch of a customer's flesh than any other director of thrillers in Hollywood. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: A superb film. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Hitchcock deftly etches his small-town characters and homey surroundings. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Peels back the welcoming warmth and sincere innocence of small-town life to reveal the gullibility and the naivete underneath; it's a fiction about the perpetuation of fictions. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Dec 3, 2012

Hitchcock's best!

Shadow of a Doubt is a spectacular film! Hitchcock himself even considered it his favorite and finest piece of work. Joseph Cotten (perhaps one of the most grossly UNDERrated actors in his generation) does a great job, and really gives you the creeps as the movie goes on.
I am an absolute Hitchcock fanatic, and this movie is excellent. Every actor in this movie is convincing, and it will make you hesitant to turn off the lights at night.

Excellent! Masterful!

Oh SOOO good! Teresa Wright is wonderful in this picture! Not sure if she won anything for this picture, but if she didn't she should have! I loved Joseph Cotton in this picture! Great acting and handsome too! ;) The supporting cast was fantastic and perfectly suited to one another! This is without a doubt ;) my favorite Hitchcock film! Couldn't go wrong on this one. I played it for a group of my friends (teen boys and girls), who don't usually get in to classic films, and they loved it!

My Favorite Hitchcock Film

Hitchcock had just made his move from the U.K. to Hollywood. Immediately, he recieves critical acclaim with Rebecca. Two years later, he releases the shaky but entertaining Sabateur. What was he to do next? Where was he to go from there? The answer: Shadow of a Doubt. Definitely one of Hitchcocks most down to Earth films. Most of his films, not all, but most of them, were so extremely far fetched to the point where I am rolling my eyes when I'm watching them. But this film has a plausible and very entertaining premise, which to me, makes it his best and most relatable. I also feel the writing has somewhat of a timeless quality. The way that the family interacted didn't seem at all dated or unrealistic. This also features some of the best acting in any Hitchcock film. Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright totally knock it out of the park with their brilliant portrayals. Definitely Hitchcock's most underrated film. It's a real shame that this doesn't get the attention it deserves. Oh well, at least I know it and love it.
