When 15-year-old Emma lands a competitive spot on a young women's equestrian acrobatics team, she is taken under the wing of her slightly older peer Cassandra. Obsessed with strength and control, Emma covets Cassandra's natural grace and poise, while Cassandra in turn silently desires more than just Emma's discipline. The psychological stakes of their friendship intensify as the two jockey for top position, and loyalty is traded for unbridled power. Meanwhile, Emma's curious and innocent eight-year-old sister is prematurely spurred to confront the treacherous frontiers of sexuality and womanhood on her own. A FilmBuff presentation.
A simple story and nice watch
She Monkeys is a film that is a great way to see Sweden through the eyes of a family in the countryside. The calm, serene fields and blue skies provide a beautiful backdrop in the film, while the tense sexual relationship between the two main characters remain a provocative, intriguing forefront. Lisa Aschan takes on filmmaking from a perspective of making the audience connect the characters relationships on their own, hinting at many things, but never clearly drawing the lines together, which provides for an interesting view. I never stopped wondering how the relationship between the girls would progress and/or part depending on the simple hardships and competitiveness that was between them. A great independent film to start Lisa Aschan's career.
