About the Movie
Inspired by the troubled but ultimately triumphant life of classical pianist David Helfgott (Academy Award-winner Geoffrey Rush - "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "Shakespeare in Love"), this moving drama focuses on Helfgott's mental breakdown as a result of his smothering father and painful retreat into a private world while still in his early 20s and on the brink of a glittering international career. After a decade of total obscurity, Helfgott achieves both personal and professional fulfillment by finding peace on the very thing that drove him to the edge his music, as he also finds love and support from a remarkable woman. Starring Academy Award-nominee Lynn Redgrave ("Gods and Monsters," "Peter Pan"), and Academy Award-nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl ("Eastern Promises," "The Thirteenth Floor"). Directed by Academy Award-winner Scott Hicks ("Snow Falling on Cedars," "No Reservations").

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Shine beams with warmth, sensitivity, and fine taste, but some of that illumination is the work of our own reflector lamps.
Fresh: Shine has a story to reckon with and powerhouse male performances.
Fresh: [Helfgott's] extraordinary life is intelligently charted here, and the three actors who play him at different stages are all exceptional.
Fresh: Inspired by the real story of classical pianist David Helfgott, "Shine" re-creates that emotionally piercing story, note by memorable note.
This movie takes the viewer on an emotional roller coaster. It shows that the human spirit has the strength to endure, and dives deeply into the varied ways we can be affected by love.
Enjoyed this when it was released in 1996. Continue to appreciate the movie now. So sad that medical profession was so ignorant in David's day. A beautiful mind destroyed by overzealous health professionals. So shameful.
