Plot Summary

From Oscar®-winning director Martin Scorsese, "Shutter Island" is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Fresh: Umberto Eco wrote, "Two cliches make us laugh but a hundred cliches move us, because we sense dimly that the cliches are talking among themselves, celebrating a reunion." Shutter Island is that reunion, and that shrine. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Not since Raging Bull has Mr. Scorsese so brazenly married brutality to beauty. Not since Kundun has one of his films felt so aspirational. – John Anderson, Wall Street Journal, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: What is real? What is delusion? What is montrous? What is decent? Shutter Island may not shatter the heart but these are gnawing achievements for a movie about madness and paranoia. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Sorry, but the late reward hardly justifies all that punishment. – Rick Groen, Globe and Mail, Jun 24, 2010

THANK YOU MARTIN!

Amazing movie...again.

Once again Martin Scorsese has made another incredible movie. It's a departure from is usual crime/character study movies but still hold up with the rest. I personally rank this as one of his finest movies. The movie is set in the 1950's at a mental health ward. Teddy Daniels is sent to Shutter Island to investigate a women who has somehow escaped the institution, which is very much like Alcatraz, or in other words it's impossible to escape. As you begin to uncover the mystery you question who is sane and what else might be going on at this island which leaves you shocked by the end. If you're a Scorsese fan (or Hitchcock fan) this movie is for you, very much like Scorsese's previous works and many Hitchcock references. There are some things to know before you watch, don't go in expecting a horror movie, this a is a suspense drama. Also don't go in expecting an enormous twist, the trailer nearly gives it away. Lastly the "editing mistakes" that people often complain about are intentional, it's a way of subconsciously making the viewer feel as if something isn't right or as it seems to be. Other then that Shutter Island is a must buy, buy it if you just feel like watching a fantastic movie.
