About the Movie

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Next Generation crew engage in their most thrilling adventure yet. They call themselves the Borg - a half organic, half-machine collective with a sole purpose: to conquer and assimilate all races. Led by their seductive and sadistic queen (Alice Krige), the Borg are headed to Earth with a devious plan to alter history. Picard's last encounter with the Borg almost killed him. Now he wants vengeance.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: In zooming out from Picard's glinty eyeball, this eighth feature film from the Trek factory displays a zippy new energy and a sleek, confident style fully independent of its predecessors. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 13, 2012

Fresh: First Contact is no grab bag of camp gewgaws; it stands proud and apart, accessible even to the Trek-deficient. This old Star, it seems, has a lot of life in it. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: While First Contact espouses the usual lofty Trek ideals, it never forgets to factor in the fun. As the Borg likes to say, resistance is futile -- and also unnecessary. – USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A smashingly exciting sci-fi adventure that ranks among the very best in the long-running Paramount franchise. – Joe Leydon, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Excellent Movie!! Encoding could have been better.

ST:First Contact demonstrates what the Next Generation cast could do when given a full movie budget. The acting is top notch, great plot, superior special effects. The Borg are more detailed, gruesome and terrifying! Historical Trek figures come to life via time travel. Great Entertainment! The iTunes version encoding was lacking correct color in a couple of scenes, the compression was set too high. 95% of the movie looks excellent on a high resolution monitor. First Contact is a 1.19 GB file, I would gladly buy a 2.0 GB file to have a higher quality movie. I hope Paramount puts more effort into high quality encoding of Star Trek:The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. They should just sell HD versions on iTunes. I enjoyed First Contact very much. Thank you iTunes!

All that STTNG is about is in this movie!

I have not seen the iTunes version, so I cannot vouch for its quality. That being said, I do own the DVD and can well vouch for the great storyline of the Borg; the "what if" of time travel; the ethos; the visual effects (heck, the opening shot will pull you right in); the humor (especially Data). And a great glimpse into how our first baby steps from our planetary cradle into a wider universe might unfold.

The Best Trek Movie (At least since Wrath of Khan)

Why do I think so? Because of two things: first, the speech about how far humanity has advanced since the "bad old days", the same speech Picard delivered way back in the first season of the TV series, but this time, completely subverted and deconstructed; and second, because of the Borg Queen. Second only to Khan in the list of Trek villains, and scarier than Khan in her absolute certainty of the superiority of her philosophy. It's the flipside to the better-society-through-technology gospel the Trek universe was founded on, and it's delicious.
