In the year of Superman Returns, Superman II starring Christopher Reeve also returns - with a totally different beginning and resolution. With Jor-El (Marlon Brando in recently discovered footage) in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the profound relationship between father and son. With different Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman. With...well, with so many changes, large and small, that this Superman II is an eye-opening alternate experience. Director Richard Donner began shooting his vision of Superman II while concurrently filming Superman The Movie. Now, for the first time, his never-before-seen vision is here. And it's a must for every Superman fan, an important addition to the legend of the Man of Steel.
This would've been great.
The Superman movies are fun to watch. They are comical in the spirit of comic books. But this movie, this version would have changed the way people viewed Superman forever. It's hard to name what isn't better about this movie than the version they went with. This movie was edited as best they could get with what they had, which today would be about as good as "copy and paste."
My only disappointment was the ending. I don't like how either version ended. I think though that if the ending of this movie had been cut about five or ten minutes sooner, the rest of the franchise could've gone in a better direction. I still give it five stars because there was too much that was good in this movie to ignore. The story made more sense blending the first movie to this version. At the very least, I recommend renting it.
I am thrilled! We asked and we received! Excellent edition to your available movies!
The Donner Cut Is The SUPERior Film!
The title says it all, but let me explain. Donner was un-fairly cut off of this movie when he was 80% into the film. The reason this film uses footage from Superman: The Movie is because of him being fired from this movie. However, this film is still better (NO super-kiss or styraphome \S/). Yes, there's still the Clois stuff. Yes, there's still "Kneel Before ZOD!" Yes, there's still Lex Luthor and the back-up cast. The main thing that's different is the ending and that Jor-El is back in the movie (mainly via Superman: The Movie flashbacks). At any rate, I highly recommend this film. This is coming from a hard-core Smallville/DCAU/DCU/Superman/Batman/JLA/TBBT/etc. fan. So, please buy this one over the other version of Superman II (which I actually watched today), because it's better than it and Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and Superman Returns all together. 'Nuff said!
