About the Movie

All the human spirit needs to a chance. In one of his most legendary films, director David Lynch chronicles the intense emotional journey of a complex, lonely man and the dedicated surgeon who changed his life. John Merrick (John Hurt) was born with a horribly disfiguring congenital disease, and suffered the humiliation of being a sideshow freak. Only when London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon) rescues him does Merrick begin to regain the life of dignity and respect that everyone deserves. Based on a true story, the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated film has earned its place in cinematic history. Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller lend moving performances to an already powerful story. Visually fascinating and historically relevant, Lynch has created a haunting masterpiece of compassion, beauty and ultimately, humanity.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What we eventually see underneath this shell is not 'the study in dignity' that Ashley Montagu wrote about, but something far more poignant, a study in genteelness that somehow suppressed all rage. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Apr 22, 2014

Fresh: This is a tale of redemption and transcendence, of the hunchback of London Hospital, of the noble phantom who wanted to go to the opera, of Beauty and the Beast. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Apr 22, 2014

Fresh: Director David Lynch has created an eerily compelling atmosphere in recounting a hideously deformed man's perilous life in Victorian England. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Lynch's powerful depiction of Merrick (played by John Hurt) moves a viewer from revulsion and fear to empathy and tenderness. That's the very movement of the story itself. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Apr 22, 2014

A masterpiece

One of the best movies I have ever seen .. A must see movie for the people who appreciate art and humanity .. A very touching movie ..

I never, and I mean never, cry during movies, but I was bawling like a baby though out the whole film. It was really a beautiful and touching story. It is one of my favorite movies and a true classic.

As moving as it gets….

When I start to feel like Life has put upon me I re-watch this and remind myself how trivial my problems in Life have been…..a story of the human spirit and what is to endure… should be required for all people to watch this and reflect upon who they are…..
