Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The dialogue and suspense created by director Polanski are first rate. You will enjoy this film.
Fresh: In the total context of Polanski's hard life and grim ordeals ... The Ghost Writer constitutes a miracle of artistic and psychological resilience.
Fresh: We're all entitled to our own opinions regarding his past but Polanski deserves credit as a filmmaker. The Ghost Writer proves that he's as good as ever at the age of 77.
Rotten: It is good to see Polanski exercising his gift for the sinister. It's a spooky world he evokes here but its architecture doesn't hang together, which is a great pity.
Great Thriller from a director who knows how to make one.
Whether you support Roman Polanski or not, you have to acknowledge that the man knows how to direct classic, old-school thrillers. This film is a well made, well paced thriller with a great performance by Kim Cattrell. Through out the film there is this atmosphere of deep dread that is just masterfully executed. This film is well worth seeing, certainly in this year of some not-so-great movies. The direction, acting, and pacing are all fantastically executed and well worth the two hours watch.
One of the Best movies of the year so far.
Flawless. Great acting and thrilling till the very last second.
A truly intelligent thriller.
What is so amazing about this film is that it builds incredible suspence without the use of action or visual effects. Instead the suspence is built upon an incredible storyline and stellar performances by the perfectly selected cast headed by Ewan McGregor. While there was not much character development for Ewan's role, he carried out his performance top-notch. Pierce Brosnan's role as Adam Lang didn't have as much screen time as I thought he would, but still managed to carry out a brilliant and satisfying performance. The screenplay was a brilliant piece of work. Instead of switching from scene to scene every few minutes, it gave us time to be really ingaged in the story and characters. An truly intellectual and wonderfully directed film that will stand out from other thrillers in the years to come. "The Ghost Writer" gets a well earned two thumbs up.
