Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The mesmerizing espionage thriller chronicles the inception and ascendancy of the CIA.
Rotten: De Niro seems to be good with actors but less successful at stringing a movie together, and keeping it together, scene by scene.
Fresh: Robert De Niro's The Good Shepherd is a remarkable study of the corrosive effects of fear and power on an establishment insider who puts duty above all else.
Rotten: It's like watching a fish stare at you from inside the magnifying wall of an aquarium, and about as exciting.
God Father of Spy Movies!
You shouldn't view this film expecting to be blown out of your seats, it is deep, and requires strict attention to detail. I am not saying you need to be of great intellect to enjoy this film, but one of the things De Niro manages to do is bring back a thinking man's drama that is often not seen in today's attention deficit, shoot them up, bang – bang movies.
I had a lot of friends that hated the movie so I had to rent it. I think it is one of Matt Damon better films. It is slow but there is a lot of stuff going on in the movie. It really sets up a great story line.... You have watch it when there is nothing going on to truely appriciate it!!
Like watching paint dry.
This is one of the most tedious, boring films ever made. Great individual elements: acting, art direction, cinemtaography. And all of it adds up to nothing. Matt Damon seems to be sleepwalking. I think the entire cast -- with the possible exception of Angelina Jolie -- was hypnotized.
And thanks, Bob, for the great nude male mud wrestling scenes! You really make a guy glad he spent ten dollars on a movie.
