When the code word "gumball" is passed by a rich young man, two housewives, two staid British gentlemen, one Italian lothario, one bug-eyed motorcyclist, a couple of Texans, an exotic model and other assorted types, they converge to participate in a hilarious non-stop car race from New York to California. The first of the cross-country road race comedies -- it's the original "Cannonball Run." Golden Globe-nominee Raul Julia ("Kiss of the Spider Woman," "The Addams Family"), Academy Award-nominee Gary Busey ("The Firm," "Under Siege") and Michael Sarrazin ("They Shoot Horses, Don't They") star.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: People who pay money to see this effort to find knee-slappers in the 55 mile-an-hour speed limit will also make amiable fools of themselves.
Rotten: Former stunt coordinator Chuck Bail produced and directed but he didn't have much of a plot.
Rotten: Although we are all going to have the greatest difficulty even remembering the name of The Gumball Rally in three months' time, it is a pleasant, slick, inoffensive entertainment.
Rotten: It relies almost exclusively on the exceptional stunt work, the plot only occasionally dropping into first gear for some boring and irrelevant dramatic stuff.
The Classic Original
This is the original cult classic from the '70s. Sometimes the reviewers are totally off, and this case is one of them. Watch this before any of the other imitators.
Car lovers enjoyment to view.
I enjoyed the movie. Now saying that, being a fan of the Cannonball movies and racing, this is just fun. If you like real racing movies with some comedy (70s style) and Raul Julia. This was well worth the watch. Yes, the movie is goofy at times but, love the eye-candy of cars in the film. Even watching a Roll Royce get sandblasted in the desert is fun to see.
I really enjoyed this movie. I've watched it several times. It's classy and not forced like it's copycats. The actors were not all that well known, and the cars were realistic. It just seemed like the real thing. If you like hot cars and driving fast, you'll like this a lot.
