About the Movie
With its unforgettably heroic story, its stunning cinematography, and acting performances that are uniformly excellent, The Man from Snowy River is one thrilling adventure you won't want to miss. Set during the 1880's, when the Australian frontier was as wild and dangerous as the American West, the film follows the exploits of a handsome youth (Tom Burlinson) who sets out to tame a wild herd of horses. Taking on a challenge many men had attempted before him, he rides deep into the treacherous and untamed wilderness of his native timberlands where boys become men fast - or die trying. Featuring Kirk Douglas in a remarkable dual role and highlighted by a climactic chase involving 40 horsemen and 90 wild stallions thundering across snow-covered peaks, The Man from Snowy River is a legendary film!

A Horseman's Classic
The Man From Snowy River is a great movie -- a classic -- but not necessarily for the typical reasons. In fact, from the Hollywood film perspective it is weak in some key areas. Plot, for instance. The plot feels a little contrived, forced. After all, Banjo Patterson's original poem told the central tale in all its detail in about a page. (Patterson, by the way, is also the author of Waltzing Matilda, the world-famous Aussie song, and the powerful female character in this story, still generating plot twists from her grave, is... Matilda.) The acting is good; otherwise some of the dialog lines could potentially have been real stinkers. Oh... and one of Kirk Douglas's characters is right out of Disneyland, though amusing nonetheless. But in the end, those things matter very little, for this movie is driven by some of the most moving pieces of film ever shot. First, the scenery is absolutely incredible. The mountains of southern Australia are amazing. Perhaps not as tall as the North American Rockies, but every bit as dramatic in their own way. Second, there is a real sense of weather in this film, and weather plays a role. It is beautifully photographed, and the characters' relationship with it is prominent. But this film contains possibly the most dramatic horsemanship in any movie, and it is very realistic, right down to the stables and tack. The young man is believable when he works, when he rides, and when he talks. He is exceptional in the film, and he does his own riding stunts, some of which are quite advanced. But the tour de force is the chase scene. The horse mob is unbelievable, and the riding through woods at high speed, by so many riders, is unlike anything I've ever seen on film, and I'm a big fan of Cowboy Westerns. Everyone should see this film if they have even the slightest interest in horses, but if your heart beats faster at the very sight of an equine face, then you're going to want to have this film around the rest of your life. You just can't get enough of it. Shooshie
It has been too many years since I have seen this film. I highly recommend it. I wish it was available for sale because I would buy it in an instant. But I need my fix so I will have to rent for now. A great performance by Kirk Douglas, awesome cinematography and a beautiful musical score to boot. If you like westerns and have not seen this movie, rent it. You will not be disappointed!
The Man from Snowy River
It's an excellant movie, my son has watched it over and over. When I saw it on iTunes, I thought wow I'll buy it. But, I'm not going to rent it, it's a movie you want to see more than once, in the same sense you don't mind seeing a John Wayne movie over and over again. So come on iTunes give it up you'll sell more than your going to rent.
