Fresh: A fierce, fragmented, downbeat film. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: Penn as director shows how he can turn an ordinary movie scene -- how many times have we seen a jailhouse interrogation? -- into something inventively, thrillingly singular. – Steven Rosen, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

This isn't a '50's crime drama. The synopsis doesn't even cover the subject of the film. Jack Nicholson is a cop, who on the very day he retires, pledges to a grieving mother that he will find the man who kidnapped and killed her small daughter. The film is a character study of a man who becomes obsessed with fulfilling that pledge.

Interesting film, terrible synopsis.

And neither John Malkovich nor Vanessa Redgrave are in this movie.

+1 on the synopsis

Okay movie. Could have been better.

Did person who wrote the synopsis even watch this film?
