Plot Summary

They were two of the most powerful leaders of the free world who forged a loyal, if tempestuous, friendship out of the crucible of political necessity. Michael Sheen and Dennis Quaid star in the HBO Films drama that chronicles the 'special relationship' shared by British prime minister Tony Blair and U.S. president Bill Clinton in the 1990s. Their wives Hillary Clinton and Cherie Blair (Hope Davis and Helen McCrory) complete a unique foursome connected by shared ideologies and personal affection as they endure triumph, conflict and scandal along the way. Directed by Emmy(R) winner Richard Loncraine ('Band of Brothers'); written by Oscar(R) nominee Peter Morgan ('Frost/Nixon,' 'The Queen').

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Very astute. – Michael Phillips, At the Movies, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's smart and believable and very well-acted. – A.O. Scott, At the Movies, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The Special Relationship does indeed focus on a friendship between two (admittedly powerful) dudes, but this is more than a mere episode of Entourage. For one thing, stuff happens. – Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, Oct 21, 2014

Fresh: The most unintentionally homoerotic film of the year. Eventually you start willing them to make out. Solid script. Slightly unconvincing Clinton performance from Quaid. – Marc Fennell, Triple J, Aug 6, 2010
