Album Review

West African tradition is upheld in Paul Horn's Africa. Horn delicately adds color to the texture of the original compositions by Guinean musician Sekou Camara Cobra. The music falls squarely within the realm of griots—hereditary West African storytellers and minstrels. The jazzy overtones of Horn's flute and saxophone blend well with the syncopated rhythms of Sekou's percussion and guitar work. The songs are sung in the traditional languages of Malinke and Susa.

When one evaluates Paul Horn's career, it is as if he were two people, pre- and post-1967. In his early days, Horn was an excellent cool-toned altoist and flutist, while later he became a new age flutist whose music is often best used as background music for meditation. Horn started on piano when he was four and switched to alto at the age of 12.
