Los Angeles in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s boasted as vital a punk scene as any on the planet, but it remained largely under the national radar. Its adherence to the DIY ethic birthed a broad range of idiosyncratic bands, lovingly sampled here. Any era that could contain the fast-and-furious early hardcore of the Circle Jerks (“What’s Your Problem”), the herky-jerky New Wave of Eyes (“Taqn”), the dark, driving, Stooges-influenced Weirdos (“A Life of Crime”) and the screwy, avant-jazz-tinged Deadbeats (“Brainless”) is well worth remembering.
