Album Review

If the steady stream of grating Ninja Tune genre exploitation didn't instill doubts of creative famine, the volley of watered-down, conservative, stay-at-home, psychedelic beats did. Mescalito's second album for Tummy Touch, We Disappeared in Style, suffered from poor planning and worse execution, restricted to little more than an anxious and difficult take on the low-lit charm of Bonobo or Dusted. It was as unfocused as its predecessor, but never as picturesque or affecting.

Luke Shepherd and Derek O'Sullivan formed the gentle nu-jazz trip-hop outfit Mescalito in the early '90s and aligned themselves with a conflict of styles well known from the increasingly eclectic wave of second-generation chill-out.
