These NYC garage rockers embrace rootsy larks and celebratory stomps alike on this 2007 album anchored by winking frontman Sammy James Jr. The opening “99%” evokes a throwback party vibe via barroom piano and a belting backup singer, while “Rock ‘n’ Roller Girl” and “Adam and Eve” fully inhabit the honeyed twang of Americana. But there’s always some subversion at play, whether it’s the Randy Newman–meets–Mungo Jerry back-porch ramble of “This Broke Heart of Mine” or the tongue-in-cheek personal commentary of “Good Ol’ Alcohol”.
