About My Friend The Chocolate Cake

Although Australia’s most common rock exports of the late 90s and early 00s have been Nirvana disciples (Silverchair, the Vines), the country has also spawned quite a few lesser known, more original sounding outfits, such as the piano and strings-based chamber pop band My Friend The Chocolate Cake. The leaders and founders of the outfit, vocalist/pianist David Bridie and cellist Helen Mountfort, were previously band mates in an 80s era Australian outfit, Not Drowning, Waving. The more acoustic-based My Friend The Chocolate Cake was formed in 1990, with Bridie and Mountfort joined by Hope Csutoros (violin), Andrew Carswell (mandolin/tin whistle), Andrew Richardson (guitar), and their Not Drowning, Waving colleague Russell Bradley, the first of several drummers. However, the band was first thought of as a mere side project, since Not Drowning, Waving was still in existence at the time. Upon Not Drowning, Waving’s break-up in 1994, Bridie and Mountfort were finally free to focus solely on their new outfit. Despite the lack of further distractions, the rate that My Friend The Chocolate Cake has released albums has been sluggish, often taking several years between releases.
