Album Review

From the first blast of instrumental fury it is obvious that these guys rock out hard. They consider their sound to be a combination of goth and good old rock & roll that they dub "goth & roll." That brings up a question: "Is it truly a new genre?" Well, there are musical similarities here. The album probably comes closest in style to that of W.A.S.P. and Motörhead. That said, the music is dark and brutal. Blackshine does manage to incorporate the stripped-down, almost stoner rock sound of C.O.C., Hair of the Dog, and other such bands. So, that pigeonholing seems a fairly good fit. The musical style is fairly unique, but not extremely earth- or genre-smashing. Really, the central dark goth leanings come in the form of the lyrics and vocal performances. It is in those elements where hints of Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Filth shine through. Still, the overall picture here is an album that is very listenable and hard rocking. It shows Blackshine to be a band that ought to have a lot of great music in its future and destined for listeners' ears. Goth & roll? Maybe. Awesome, hard-edged, entertaining music? Definitely!
