Album Review

This live studio recording features renowned Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, oral historian and hereditary praise singer from Gambia, West Africa. One of the most respected old style kora players in the world, this is Jobarteh's first recording on an American label and includes eight traditional West African melodies most often associated with the kora. A large, hollowed gourd covered with cowhide and twenty-one strings attached, the kora harp is the most well known of African string instruments. Jobarteh's occasional vocal accompaniment, combined with the extensive liner notes, adds a distinctive authenticity to this captivating new release.
