Essential Albums
- The francophone Montrealers' 1974 debut is a sparkling swirl of folk, pop and rock. Influenced by the organic folk-rock sounds of the day, the band produced an album full of rich vocal harmonies, ringing acoustic guitars and a sweet, sunny vibe. Some tracks, like “Le picbois”, have a dash of traditional Québécois folk, while the piano-led “À toutes les fois” touches engagingly on classic Carole King territory. Still, French lyrics notwithstanding, much of the LP sounds like it could’ve drifted out of Laurel Canyon as a dreamy addendum to Crosby, Stills & Nash’s salad days.
About Beau Dommage
Guitarist/vocalist Michel Rivard and author/composer Pierre Huet formed Quenouille bleue in 1970 at the University of Quebec in Montreal for art-show performances. The duo added keyboard player Robert Leger and later vocalist/pianist Marie-Michele Desrosiers, changing their name to Beau Dommage in 1973. Signed by Capitol, the band (which also included drummer Real Desrosiers and bassist Pierre Bertrand) released a self-titled album two years later. Ou Est Passe la Noce? followed the same year and Un Autre Jour Se Leve en Ville in 1977. With Rivard and Marie-Michele Desrosiers wishing to begin solo careers and the rest of the band ready to leave, Beau Dommage broke up, releasing Passagers and Les Grands Succes de Beau Dommage in 1978. The band re-formed in 1984 for a special live performance; live dates from Montreal were compiled onto two 1985 albums, Au Forum de Montreal and 26 et 27 Octobre 1984 Au Forum de Montreal. The greatest hits album Leurs Plus Grands Succes was released in 1988. ~ John Bush
