Kansas formed in the city of Topeka in 1970 around the talents of core members Kerry Livgren, Dave Hope, Phil Ehart, Robby Steinhardt, Steve Walsh, and Rich Williams. Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late '70s; though typically dismissed by critics, many of the group's hits like "Dust in the Wind" and "Carry on My Wayward Son" remain staples of AOR radio playlists to this day. ~ Jason Ankeny
