About New Strangers
This folk/blues duo comprised of Danny Kalb (guitar, vocals) and Samuel Charters (guitar, vocals). Both were former members of the True Endeavor Jug Band and Dave Van Ronk’s Ragtime Jug Stompers. The New Strangers were active in the folk clubs of the US east coast between 1964 and 1965 drawing inspiration from pre-war musicians Tampa Red and Georgia Tom. Meet The New Strangers, recorded with the aid of session bass player Leonard Gaskin, was released on Prestige/Folklore Records, for which Charters served as a producer. It includes a rendition of the traditional song ‘Alberta’, a showcase for Kalb’s exceptional guitar picking. He later formed the much-respected Blues Project before pursuing a solo career. Charters subsequently moved to California where he produced Country Joe And The Fish and wrote several books on blues music.
