Teddy Grace

About Teddy Grace

While often clouded by the anonymity of the vocalist in the early days of jazz, the haunted Teddy Grace coaxed a lifetime of passion out of a somewhat limited range, making herself able to coo gently for jazz, growl seductively in blues, lending her complex and alluring voice to a host of recordings by legends of her time. Her singing career began fittingly on a 1931 dare which led to a soaring ascent, peaking when she signed on with Mal Hallett's wild-eyed dance band. Grace's Decca 78 recordings, released as BLUES SUNG BY TEDDY GRACE, somewhat of an oddity at the time, would become discerning jazz fan collector's items. Unfortunately, while gruelingly entertaining troops during WWII, the chanteuse lost her voice; while it would return, she would never sing again.
