This tale is about a young girl named Nell Trent who is an orphan living with her grandfather in his shop of odds and ends. Nell’s grandfather loves her dearly and has two obsessions. One is protecting her from her wayward brother. The other is a burning desire to gamble. Unfortunately her grandfather tries to secure Nell’s future by gambling away every penny he has. The story details their struggle to keep the shop against impossible odds. It not only includes elements of pursuit and courage, but pits poverty and guts against evil and greed.
