Reseña de álbum

My Golden Favorites is an early greatest-hits album covering Teresa Brewer's Coral Records period from 1950 to 1960. All of her Top Ten hits are here, including "Music! Music! Music!" (first issued on London Records, to be precise), "Till I Waltz Again With You," and "Ricochet." The big hits have been reissued elsewhere, but My Golden Favorites contains a few of Brewer's late, minor hits that are more rarely heard. "Heavenly Lover," for one, is a "rockaballad" with piano triplets that barely cracked the Top 40 in 1959, and "Peace of Mind" from 1960 is a quasi-religious number with an interesting arrangement built around a busy clip-clop rhythm and a prominent vocal chorus. Brewer's elfin appearance and chipper demeanor made her a natural for novelty material and she recorded a lot of it at Coral. "A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl" is one example, a song that vacillates between ballad and rocker with a little hepcat slang thrown in, played for humor rather than hipness. My Golden Favorites is a concise anthology showing the commercial high points of Brewer's hit-making peak with a few comparatively obscure but interesting cuts thrown in.

Though some find it disconcerting to hear her cutesy, slightly nasal Your Hit Parade-style delivery in a jazz context, at her best she can swing with a loose and easy fervor, aided greatly by the distinguished company she often keeps on her records. Brewer started singing on Major Bowes' Amateur Hour at the age of five and scored her first big hit...
