Biografía

Jacob Heringman is a lutenist based in London and in demand for early music performances around the world. He was born in the United States, but went to England to study with Jakob Lindberg at London's Royal College of Music. He studied with Pat O'Brien in New York, then returned to England in 1987 to make it his permanent base. At that time, London had been one of the world's centers of original instruments-style performances of early music for nearly two decades. Some of the leading ensembles in that movement quickly found Heringman's lute solo and continuo performance valuable. He frequently performed on radio concerts and CDs with such groups as the King's Singers, the New London Consort, the Dufay Collective, the Rose Consort of Viols, Fretwork, Musicians of the Globe, the English Baroque Soloists, and the Taverner Consort.

In 1990, he formed Virelai, a group devoted to late-Medieval and early Renaissance music, comprising himself, viol player Susanna Pell (now his wife), vocalist Catherine King, and flutist William Lyons. As is true with many members of the early music movement, Virelai has become interested in using their old-style instruments in new music, and has commissioned British composer Andrew Keeling to write for the group. Virelai has made several recordings for the Virgin Classics label.

In 1998 he released his first solo album, Holburns Passion: Music for Lute, on the ASV label. It was eligible for consideration among the releases of 1999 according to Gramophone Magazine's publication schedule, and it was awarded the Gramophone Award as one of the best CDs of 1999. He has continued to make solo albums for the DGM label. The first of two albums is Black Cow, lute music by Valentin Bakfark and Matthäus Waissel; the second, Josquin Desprez, Sixteenth-Century Lute Settings, is the first recording devoted to the lute music of Josquin Desprez.

Heringman is also valued as a sensitive and stylistically aware accompanist. He has worked with Michael Chance and Barbara Bonney in concert and on recordings. His most frequent song partner is mezzo-soprano Catherine King, a fellow member of Virelai. He has toured and recorded with her on the Linn and ASV labels. Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine both voted the disc Airs de Cour (which also had tenor Charles Daniels as a guest artist) one of the best of 1999., Rovi
