Since the early '00s, this Brooklyn band have helped redefine indie with art-rock noise, dystopian dance-punk, bubbling electronic and tons of soul. It's all tied together with anthemic choruses that gratify no matter how dark the material: Cacophonic sounds become cathartic pleasures as scrappy percussion and buzzing guitars propel "Wolf Like Me"; Kyp Malone's falsetto creeps around Tunde Adebimpe's sonorous bellows to give "Staring at the Sun" a foreboding drama. Even when they get romantic, as on the synth-laced ballad "Will Do", they make it throb with passion.
