From her debut album Nelly Furtado has been somewhat of an acquired taste. Her debut album 'Whoa, Nelly!' combined slick pop tunes with a R&B/Hip-Hop twist, making escapades to Folk. Fans were left guessing where Furtado would go next. Then there was "Folklore", the definetly more folky album, which gave Furtado a chance to show the power of her vocal talents. Hitting the charts with songs like 'Powerless' and 'Try', Furtado seemed to have found her territory. And then suddenly, when everybody thinks she's going to come up with another folky pop song, Furtado brings us 'Loose'. It's like someone suddenly changed her style, trying on new clothes. In this case she tries on Hip-Hop clothes, making her debut as a rapper. 'Loose' could be seen as a follow up to 'Folklore'; instead of concentrating on music of the soul, she now chooses music of the body. It could also be seen as a debut, a really good debut. Maybe still adjusting to the fact that the 'girl from Try' now is sounding like Aaliyah, 'Loose' is a versatile album, primarily focusing on Hip-Hop. 'Promiscuous' introduces us to the way this album will follow, dragging the listener into a sort of trance. This is only stimulated more by the song 'Maneater'. Honestly it makes you want to dance. Still Furtado has not given up on her vocal talents, showing them on songs like 'Showtime' and the catchy duet with Juanes, ' Te Busque'. Highlights on the album are also to be found, Furtado gets a try at reggaton, and does this remarkably well in the song 'No Hay Igual'. And previous fans do get a little back from Nelly's 'roots', with the song 'In God's Hands'. Furtado even manages to give us something that could be on an iMogen Heap album, the song 'All Good Things'. There's just one downside, she should never again ask Timbaland for help. He might have helped produce the slick tunes on the album, he sure makes people want to wish him away when he starts squit-squating along. And as this is an 'album for the body', Furtado has almost not shown a thing of intelligent lyrics. Conclusion: A good debut for Furtado, when it comes to Hip-Hop. Don't expect the same singer/songwriter we knew, but a different Nelly Furtado. We now know she is a very versatile artist.

I really like Maneater, that's what made me to buy this album. But now I love most of the songs of the album 'Loose!' Afraid is a nice welcome with an uptempo beat and a nice melody. Maneater and Promiscuous bring some power to it. Glow is a very nice smooth song, a bit chill-out. Showtime is a ballad, but not a traditional one. No Hay Igual & Te Busque (with Juanes) are two Portugese songs, which sound very good. Say it right and Do it are making you dance again and In God's Hands is a traditional Furtado ballad (like Try). Wait for you is an untraditional ballad and Somebody to love is a samba song. All Good Things is a nice ending of the album. My advice? Buy it! Listen to the songs a few times and you will love them too!

Not as good as 'Maneater'

I purchased the album 'Loose' because the song 'maneater' is one of my today's favourites. A surprise for the classic Nelly Furtado fan: this album is really different, no ballads and a lot of hip-hop influences. A recommendation if you like artists as Timbaland (featuring 5 songs).

When Nelly Furtado appeared with her neo-hippie, multiculti debut, Whoa, Nelly!, in 2001, a dance-diva makeover seemed like an impossibility, but the singer/songwriter revived and sustained her career with the sexually charged Loose in 2006, in the process consolidating her position as one of the most unpredictable artists of her decade. Furtado always proudly displayed her Portuguese heritage, a distinction that separated her from legions of emerging female singer/songwriters in the early days of...
