The only thing that Chris Farlowe had not done in the space of 15 years as a recording artist was a concert album, and Chris Farlowe Band Live finally filled that need; true, it should have been a double LP, and he ought to have had more of his older repertory represented — this should have been as much of a career-spanner as Van Morrison's It's Too Late to Stop Now — but what is here is superb. The pipes are better than ever and the band is in excellent form, even if their sound is a little too contemporary and focused slightly more on hard rock more than soul

Chris Farlowe always seemed destined for great things as a singer — and based on the company he kept on-stage and the people he worked with in the mid-'60s, he did succeed, at least on that level. Born John Henry Deighton in Islington, North London, in 1940, he reached his early teens just as the skiffle boom was breaking in England, and was inspired by Lonnie Donegan to enter music.
