It's hard not to see Sharleen Spiteri's first solo album Melody as some kind of reaction to the success of British retro-soul divas Amy Winehouse and Duffy, singers who expanded upon the blend of Motown and Dusty Sharleen sketched out with Texas in the '90s, turning it into something a little bit sexier, something a little bit more modern. Spiteri's response is to scale back the creeping upscale digital sheen of latter-day Texas records and get thoroughly '60s on Melody, crafting a full-fledged re-creation of the sound of soulful, swinging London. Strings sigh, horns glide, Spiteri is supported by girl groups as she sings sprightly melodies that often bring to mind Dusty at her prime, but she also cops a bit of Nancy Sinatra's on "I'm Going to Haunt You." There may be some slight modern flair in the drum loops of the title track, but Melody is noteworthy in its retro purity: it's a sleek yet warm tribute to classic '60s pop, sounding richer and fuller than almost anything Texas did after turning into U.K. stars.

Major doo-wop-style album!

Spiteri has been in the music industry for years with Texas (one of my favorites), yet this is her first solo attempt. And what a stunning solo debut it is! "Melody" contains songs that bring back the old days. The record kinda has a 60's feel-good-vibe to it and I don't think anyone who puts it on could manage to keep still. I found myself clapping and tapping along on several songs and trying to hit that high note like Sharleen. I hate comparisons, but in this case it's quite inevitable bcuz there are similarities: If you like female contemporary singers like Amy, Adele, Duffy, and perhaps Candie Payne, you'll surely love Sharleen Spiteri!

Feel-good soul album

I have adored Sharleen Spiteri's voice for many years listening to her in the band Texas, and was very excited to learn that she was bringing out a solo album - and boy, did it deliver! Starting with the first song, It Was You, this album has you in it's grips. Sharleen's vocals are extremely strong, the melody and beats are uplifting and for me, this album is on of the ones I put on at the beginning of a night out to get into the mood. I can definitely recommend it!
