Fiorella Mannoia has stated that she was not contemplating another live album for 2010 — her fifth in ten years — but that the success of her "Acoustic Tour" forced her hand. On the evidence of Il Tempo e l'Armonia, one must feel grateful that it should have been so. Accompanied by a small ensemble of ten instrumentalists, including a string quartet, Mannoia is in customary fine voice on this set, culled from two nights at Verona's Teatro Filarmonico. That much is, of course, to be expected — but what makes this concert special is that it highlights how eclectic and yet excellent Mannoia's choices are. She is clearly not bound by any other criteria than finding a truly fine song, and when her selections are performed this way, with no concessions whatsoever to current trends (as it may happen in some of her studio albums), it becomes all the more apparent how unerring her taste is. Contrary to many an Italian female singer, Mannoia is first and foremost interested in putting her considerable vocal talents in the service of sophisticated songwriting, rather than in pandering to the Sanremo Festival crowd. She picks her authors from all corners of the Italian music scene: the great cantautori tradition of Ivano Fossati, Francesco De Gregori, and Paolo Conte, the new talents of Pacifico and Cesare Cremonini, staples of mainstream Italian pop both classic (Mogol and Lucio Battisti) and contemporary (Tiziano Ferro and Laura Pausini), rebels such as Renato Zero and Vasco Rossi, and new rock acts such as Negramaro and Negrita. She is equally non-discriminating when casting her net outside of domestic waters, covering both Manu Chao and Chico Buarque. Furthermore, she proudly champions a new song by Avion Travel, "Se Veramente Dio Esisti" (the opening track and the only one recorded in the studio), which was scandalously rejected from the Sanremo Festival competition, presumably because of its controversial subject matter. Arguably an even better introduction to one of Italy's most refined female singers than a standard greatest-hit compilation, Il Tempo e l'Armonia was released in two different editions. The standard edition is comprised of a single 15-selection CD, plus a DVD of the concert, while the deluxe edition features the full concert over two audio discs, the DVD, and a photo book. To wrap it up in style, on September 12, two days before Il Tempo e l'Armonia was released, Mannoia decided to both present the album and celebrate the 30th anniversary of her career with a free concert at the sumptuous Arena di Verona, which was later broadcast nationwide.

Italian pop star Fiorella Mannoia started getting involved in show business while participating in a movie called Non Cantare, Spara! at the age of 13. She recorded her first single shortly afterward in 1969, and her debut album, Mannoia, Foresi & Co, was released by RCA in 1972. Mannoia made an appearance at the prestigious Sanremo Festival in 1981 singing "Cafe Nero Bollente," and returned to the same event in 1984 with "Come Si Cambia." A year later, Momento Delicato was released by Ariston,...
