With almost 20 years of avant-garde music and important albums with Les Granules and Jean Derome et les Dangereux Zhoms, Montreal saxophonist Jean Derome released a mammoth CD in 1996: Je Me Souviens - Hommage à Georges Perec/Tu R'lutes. The first work, "Je Me Souviens - Hommage à Georges Perec," (I Remember - Tribute to Georges Perec) is a 45-minute suite involving an ensemble of 13 musicians, a kind of modern big band or music-hall house band. Instrumentation includes flutes, clarinets, brass, piano, organ, electric guitar, double bass, turntables, drums, and Latin percussion. The piece is based on fragments of Georges Perec's book Je Me Souviens. Derome picked out the musical references, researched the material (from Yma Sumac to Boby Lapointe, Sydney Bechet to Ennio Morricone), and condensed them in 26 short pastiches. The result is a laugh riot: style collages, shifting from swing to music hall to circus music to classical and back, always approached from an avant-garde perspective. Musical segments are linked together by chatter between musicians and rehearsal/recording indications giving the impression of a one-take venture (all phony of course). Derome and Robert M. Lepage deliver some of their best solos, while turntablist Martin Tétreault brings in strange ambiences and solos with the voice of others. Throughout the piece, Derome's personality is transfigured. Although inspired by many different artists, his touch can be felt everywhere. Fans of his duo albums with René Lussier will be delighted. The CD also contains a 20-minute suite titled "Tu R'Luttes," 17 games for 12 improvisers. The musicians come from Montreal (the Flammèches Ensemble, six Ambiances Magnétiques musicians) and Belgium (White Wine Dark Grapes Ensemble). Typical Derome humor still prevails, but the music is more serious and demanding. Once again Tétreault delivers an excellent performance, as do vocalists Joane Hétu and Isnel Da Silveira. This CD is simply the essential Jean Derome. Fans of John Zorn's style-zapping technique and those who believe demanding music should be approached with humor will thoroughly enjoy this album. ~ François Couture, Rovi

One of the most visible figures of Montreal's musique actuelle scene, saxophonist and composer Jean Derome is also one of the instigators of the music community represented by the Ambiances Magnétiques label he co-founded. The fact that he is a graduate of the College of Pataphysics and was the recipient of the prestigious Freddie Stone Award in 1992 goes a long way to explain the blend of absurd, childish fun and dead-serious avant-garde jazz found in his compositions. When asked what kind of music...
