Albumrecensie

Most of the sailing men who write and sing seafaring songs make it a point to spend as much time above the waterline as possible. Tom Lewis, a well-respected purveyor of traditional shanties and original sea songs, is an exception to that rule in that he spent his 24 years of marine experience as a member of the British submarine service. His fourth album is a winning program of wonderful songs on which he is accompanied by such diverse artists as Canadian folk legends Tanglefoot, the American five-women vocal ensemble Broadside, various studio sidemen and even, in one lovely case, about sixty grade-school children. Lewis and his cohorts make some quirky musical choices (such as the really annoying musical saw on "Port of Call") and hit a few wrong notes along the way (such as on the shaky chorus of "Radio Times"), but most of the material here is excellent. Highlights include what may be the definitive version of "Nassau Bound" (otherwise known as "Sloop John B."), a fine setting of Ian Geddes' anti-nostalgic "Nipper," and a rousing rendition of that most popular of sea shanties, "Blow the Man Down." There is a hidden, untitled, and unexplained country & western track at the end of the program, and while it's fairly expertly performed, it makes a curious coda to an album that is otherwise charming in more straightforward ways. Recommended.
