Albumrecensie

Superhero Brother sees G. Love & Special Sauce pulling back on the guest appearances from their last two albums and just focusing on the core group, now including Mark Boyce on keys. They still cover a lot of bases musically, from the classic rock moves of "Communication" to the New Orleans second-line rhythm on the chorus of "Peace, Love and Happiness." A bit of beatboxing introduces "What We Need," while "Wontcha Come Home" almost sounds like an old Paul Simon song. Then there are the more tender tracks, like "Grandmother" and "Soft and Sweet." The smirking "Wiggle Worm" is destined to become a concert favorite, while "City Livin'" recalls the '70s with punchy horns and groovy guitar. There's certainly nothing new about G. Love's "forget your troubles, listen to my music and just feel good" gospel, but this time out some of the songs seem a bit formulaic. Then there's the hazy, totally baked "Who's Got the Weed," replete with coughing and bong-hit sound effects. The title track gets closest to the blues as a solo acoustic track. Musically, it's pretty tasty but verses detailing the various heroic ways G. Love would save the world are contrasted with the confusing refrain "Awwww baby, my love don't seem the same." Huh? Superhero Brother will probably sound pretty good as background at a party, but there's not a lot of meat on these bones.

Great, although not ‘Classic G.’

This is not your ‘typical’ G. Love album. Just listen to the opening track. If The Beatles were still 'with us' and were to do a G. Love cover, this could be it. Each song in it self wouldn't be out of place on one of his former releases especially Coast To Coast Motel and Philadelphonic, and to a lesser extent The Electric Mile or The Hustle, all heavily depending on instrumentation, arrangements and sound editing. Most of the songs feature a piano that doesn’t really add to the ‘feel’ of the song, whilst the double bass and drums sound to clean. In the end it’s G.’s singing and harmonica playing that bring out the best in all the songs. Personally I would love to hear all the tracks performed live. Just G. playing his guitar and harmonica, a double bass and drums, no elaborate voicing, instrumentation et cetera, just three great musicians and an adequate mix. G’s excellent song writing doesn’t need all that postproduction. The title track to the album proves it.

Okay, better than Lemonade

This album is pretty much your average collections of G.Love songs. Some good, many okay, and one or two less good ones. But unlike his previous album "Lemonade" this album is much more coherent - no electronics, just 3, 4, 5 guys jammin'. For us G.Love fans a nice addition to his oeuvre. Still, those who are unfamiliar with G, check out "The Electric Mile" and "The Hustle".

G. Love & Special Sauce are a Philadelphia-based trio whose laid-back, sloppy blues sound is quite unique, as it encompasses the sound/production of classic R&B and recent rap artists (the Beastie Boys, in particular). The group — G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) on guitar/vocals/harmonica, Jeff Clemens on drums, and Jim Prescott on upright bass — released their self-titled debut in 1994 on OKeh/Epic. It received enthusiastic reviews and nearly went gold on the strength of the MTV-spun...
