Alter bridge!!!

Het is toch weer wat anders ,
Dit album heeft geen
Nummers die lijken
Op watch over you maar echter wel veel harde rock
Toch geen 5. Sterren want zo'n watch over you nummertje had er wel op gemogen:)

AB III is good, but it takes a few listens to actually start appreciating it. AB's previous two albums had a much more immediate impact (on me), especially Blackbird, that album just oozes wow factor the first time you listen to it (imo), and One Day Remains has that wow factor too (to a somewhat lesser extent possibly). This album has a few tracks that have that effect to a certain degree (Isolation, Words darker than their wings, Still remains) but the remaining tracks will take a bit of getting used to. I'm not sure why but it's just, well, different. I guess (for a non-music-journo-normal-pleb-review) that it seems a bit chaotic, different, less harmonic at times, maybe even arrogant in it's non-commercial stance (imo - and not that I want commercial per se), it's something I can't quite put my finger on or haven't figured out. That said, having listened to the entire album a few times it's really growing on me and has obtained the lofty heights of 4 stars, and I'm sure given another week or so with the album I'll be adding that 5th star.

For new listeners to AB I'd suggest Blackbird as the first purchase/listen, but for those used to their music then this is surely still a must buy/have (even if out of pure loyalty and gratitude for the previous two albums!) and if at first you find it somewhat strange, don't worry, it will grow on you.

Three years ago Alter Bridge made it quite clear on their album Blackbird: “don’t forget we’re here to stay!” In 2004, One Day Remains presented Alter Bridge’s powerful rock songs alternated with beautiful ballads. Mark Tremonti’s amazing guitar playing and Myles Kennedy’s voice combined meant great songs being both hard rock and very melodic. On Blackbird Alter Bridge found their sound, with Myles’ influence more pronounced, showing a matured songwriting. Just listen to the title track and you’ll know that I mean.

With AB III they again deliver a musical masterpiece. It has definitely the Alter Bridge flavor yet at the same time is very different from Blackbird. It takes a few times listening through all of the songs to get used to this new album of Alter Bridge. However AB III will grow on you. Those of you who’d expected a full out metal album after listening to the single Isolation will find that the music of Alter Bridge is actually very diverse. From the tension in the intro of Slip To The Void, the thundering guitars on Isolation, along the bittersweet melodies of Ghost Of Days Gone By, to the dark Show Me A Sign, and the open ending “into the light may you fall” on Words Darker Than Their Wings: AB III takes you on a journey with a man who, according to Myles en Mark, lost all faith in what he once believed to be true.

Lyrically the album is quite dark, yet there’s also that feeling of a summer breeze in songs as Ghost of days gone by. That song is also a great example of the diversity of Alter Bridge: the lighter feel of the verse and chorus and the dark heavy bridge. Isolation is very metal-ish yet with very clear melody lines. Wonderful life speaks about hurt in an honest way, although Watch Over You and In Loving Memory are better songs in my opinion. The guitar riff of I Know It Hurts will stay in your head, the solo on Coeur d’Alene is again amazing, and the clean guitar intro to Life Must Go On is just trademark Tremonti. Words Darker Than Their Wings suits as the final song on the album as an open ending to the theme. It also features Mark on lead vocals.

With all those amazing songs it’s really too bad that the mix is less transparent than on the previous albums. As soon as the full band kicks in the instruments sound less pronounced. The guitars solo’s don’t stand out as much as on Blackbird. Nevertheless AB III is a masterpiece of modern rock which stands out between other American rock albums in both music and lyrics. If you’re new to Alter Bridge make sure you’ll listen to Blackbird too!
