A televised musical drama series created by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy following the success of the former's Empire, Star features original music performed by the starring trio of Jude Demorest (Star Davis), Brittany O'Grady (Simone Davis), and Ryan Destiny (Alex Crane). Fellow cast members such as Queen Latifah, Luke James, Brandy, and Keke Palmer have contributed, as have guest stars including Patti LaBelle and Quavo. The Fox series debuted in December 2016. A four-track EP soundtrack of the premier episode, highlighted by the Demorest showcase "I Bring Me," was released simultaneously and registered on Billboard's soundtrack chart. Johnta Austin, Rodney Jerkins, and Troy Taylor were among the songwriters and producers of the material. From that point through the series' third season in 2018, songs from the show have been released individually, ranging stylistically from throwback soul to gospel, with slick contemporary R&B the primary style. ~ Andy Kellman
