In Saskatoon, in July 1918 members of the Ukrainian settlement community met in order to address issues affecting the religious life of that community. The result of this meeting was the establishment of a uniquely Canadian Church: the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada. This paper looks at the editorial content of the Winnipeg newspaper Ukrainskyi holos in order to demonstrate how this event is rooted in the community's desire for the Ukrainian Catholic Church to function, as it had in Ukraine, as a defender of the interests of the people and a bulwark against discrimination and oppression. As it became evident to community leaders that the Roman Catholic Church was unable to fulfill this role, they began to envision the creation of a new entity: a Ukrainian Canadian Orthodox Church. However, the decision of the July 1918 meeting although greeted by the editors of Ukrainskyi holos does not seem to have been pre-planned.
