Blessed with perfect pitch, this larger-than-life figure sings a set of standards with precision and empathy, to the accompaniment of guitars, violins and trumpets. On “Albur de Amor”, he shows his romantic vulnerability, while he laments life away from home on “Paso del Norte”. The empathy in his voice on the heartrending “Cancion Mixteca” draws us into the profound sadness of the nostalgic lyrics, but it’s that mariachi yelp on “Tampico Hermoso” that is most unforgettable.
