Album Review

Deuter has so much material available that it's best to start with one of several compilations of his work. Although Call of the Unknown is also a fine introduction to his music, the double-disc Sands of Time is really the best choice for several reasons; first because it features some of his most recent compositions (including a selection taken from his video soundtrack to The Petrified Forest) that you won't find on any other recording. The first disc also offers a balanced presentation of music from some of his best albums. The second disc, however, is the real treat because it features never-before-released improvisations and extended compositions recorded live in performance.

Like many artists in the contemporary instrumental realm, Deuter mixes acoustic and electronic instruments, ethnic influences, and sounds from nature -- only he's been doing it since the early '70s. Born in the German village of Falkenhagen, Deuter learned flute and taught himself to play guitar but was discouraged from pursuing music as a career. The trauma of a nearly fatal auto accident in 1970, however, motivated him to pursue his dreams. His first recording, D, was released on Kuckuck in 1971....
