Album Review

This first single from the Throwing Muses album The Real Ramona, and it's one-third solid, one-third okay and one-third pretty pointless. The solid third is "Counting Backwards," a fairly decent rocker with rough-edged vocals that give it some character, though the gaited drums don't really fit with the otherwise bluesy sound. The solid third is "Same Sun," which is given something of a perfunctory treatment, though it warms up to a Joplinesque blues-styled heat by the end. The pointless third is the plodding, tuneless cover of "Amazing Grace," in which the vocals get steadily more and more out of tune. It's well beyond embarrassing.
