Album Review

Although the animated medieval fantasy film Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight turned out to be a straight-to-video release, appearing on DVD starting January 15, 2008, composer Karl Preusser was able to employ not only a full symphony orchestra and chorus, but also a collection of period instruments to play his background score. The familiar strings and massed voices are thus joined by several different registers of the gemshorn (alto, tenor, and bass), along with a lute, a hammered dulcimer, a hurdy-gurdy, and so on. Preusser's music needs to accompany all sorts of cartoonish derring-do, as cue titles like "Escape from the Inn," "The Resurrection of Goldmoon," and "The Battle of Pax Tharkas" (in two parts!) indicate, and while he doesn't come up with anything strikingly original, he presents functional support to the fanciful adventures undertaken by Goldmoon (voiced by Lucy Lawless), the "half-elf warrior" Tanis (Michael Rosenbaum), and the wizard Raistlin (Keifer Sutherland).
