Editors’ Notes

Kylie Minogue was already a teenage TV star in Australia when she released her debut album, 1988's Kylie. Produced by the ‘80s hitmaking trio Stock-Aiken-Waterman, the album is bubbly and ultra-energized from start to finish. Critics couldn’t help comparing the disc to Madonna’s dance-pop records at the time—and to tell the truth, the resemblance is more than superficial. Kylie sounds genuinely caught up in waves of infatuation as she breezes her way through relentlessly upbeat tracks like “I Should Be So Lucky” (a No. 1 single in Australia, the U.K., and five other countries), “Turn It Into Love,” and “Love at First Sight.” She nestles comfortably into funkier fare (“It’s No Secret,” “Look My Way”) and rides a ‘60s retro groove with aplomb (“I Miss You”). Best of all is her smile-inducing cover of “The Loco-Motion,” driven home by a throbbing synth track. Kylie catches Minogue full of high spirits and remains one of her defining albums.
